Archer Home Care for Families Along SR 24
Gainesville Home Care provides home care in Archer, FL for older adults who want to stay in the houses and on the land they know. Archer counted 1,140 residents in the 2020 Census, and 17.8% of them were 65 or older. Our caregivers help with bathing, meals, memory care and recovery after a hospital stay, and Dana Brooks, our care coordinator, stays in touch with your family every week.
The Depot That Still Anchors Archer
Archer grew up as a shipping stop. Settlers called the area Deer Hammock and then Darden's Hammock in the 1840s, and the Florida Railroad reached the community in 1858, pulling the town east toward the tracks. David Levy Yulee, Florida's first U.S. Senator, built that line to link Fernandina and Cedar Key, and his Cotton Wood Plantation sat about a mile from today's depot. A state historical marker there notes that Jefferson Davis's personal baggage arrived at Cotton Wood under armed guard on May 22, 1865.
The town was renamed for James T. Archer, Florida's first Secretary of State. The old Seaboard Air Line depot on SW 134th Avenue is now the Archer Historical Society's railroad museum, and a farmers market sets up there on Tuesday afternoons. Many of our older clients remember when the trains still ran. Those memories are worth asking about, and a good caregiver will.
Senior Care Along SR 24 and US 41
Archer sits where State Road 24 meets US 27/41, about 16 miles southwest of Gainesville. Most of the town lies south of that intersection, with homes spreading out along SW 170th Street (CR 241) toward the Levy County line and the county roads toward Watermelon Pond. Some clients live in town near the library and the depot. Others are on acreage with long driveways, a few animals and the nearest neighbor out of sight.
That mix shapes the help families ask for. A widow in town may want a caregiver for four hours each morning to help her bathe, dress and get breakfast going. A couple on a farm may need someone overnight because one spouse wanders after dark and the other is worn out. We match each Archer client with a caregiver who is comfortable with the drive and the setting, and you meet that caregiver before the first visit.
Getting to UF Health Shands From Archer
Archer Road is the same SR 24 that runs through town, and it leads almost straight to UF Health Shands Hospital and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center, which face each other on SW Archer Road. From most Archer homes the drive takes about 25 minutes, passing Haile Plantation on the way into town. That makes Shands the hospital most Archer families know, for emergencies, surgery and specialist follow-ups alike.
Our hospital to home care is built around that drive. A caregiver can meet your parent at discharge, ride home with them, pick up prescriptions on the way and stay through the first night. Care often starts within 24 to 48 hours of a discharge call. For everyday checkups, UF Health Archer Family Health Care, a nurse-led clinic run by the UF College of Nursing, is right in town on SW 134th Avenue.

Summer Heat and Storm Season in Southwest Alachua County
Out on rural acreage, a power outage or a downed tree on a county road can leave an older adult cut off for longer than in town. Before June, we go over a simple plan with each Archer family: who checks in, where medications and a list of doctors are kept, and whether a caregiver can stay through a storm. During summer, caregivers watch for signs of overheating and make sure water is close at hand. Our hurricane guide for seniors has a checklist you can print.
