Keystone Heights Home Care in Clay County's Lake Region
Keystone Heights is a small lake town in southwest Clay County, built in the 1920s on the sandy ridge between Lake Geneva and Lake Brooklyn. The 2020 Census counted 1,446 residents. Gainesville Home Care provides home care in Keystone Heights, FL for older adults who want to stay near the water and the neighbors they know. Our caregivers come from our Gainesville office, about 45 minutes away by SR 26 and SR 21.
A Pennsylvania Developer's Town on the Florida Lakes
Around 1917 this was a small community called Brooklyn, on what is now SR 100 near Lake Brooklyn. Pittsburgh developer John J. Lawrence saw the lakes on a visit, and his family built the first house in 1920 overlooking Lake Geneva. Residents renamed the town Keystone Heights in 1922, and it was incorporated in 1925, named for Lawrence's home state. The grand Keystone Inn burned in 1954. Its site is now the park in front of City Hall on Lawrence Boulevard.
The lakes have their own story. Lake Brooklyn and Lake Geneva dropped sharply after the 1960s from dry years and regional groundwater pumping, and a recent Black Creek pipeline project was built to help raise them. Long-time residents can tell you where the shoreline used to be, and many still walk down to the water most evenings.
Keystone Heights Senior Care for an Older Town
Keystone Heights skews older than the county around it. Census Bureau survey data for 2020 to 2024 estimate that about 18.5% of city residents are 65 or older, compared with about 17.1% across Clay County. We hear from spouses caring for a husband or wife at home, and from grown children in Orange Park, Jacksonville or Gainesville who can only get out on weekends. Lake homes add their own challenges: steps down to a dock, a sloped yard, a bathroom built decades ago.
