Millhopper Home Care for Longtime Northwest Gainesville Homeowners

Millhopper is the wooded northwest corner of Gainesville that takes its name from the Devil's Millhopper sinkhole. Many residents bought their homes decades ago, raised their children here and have no plans to leave. In ZIP 32653, which covers the state park and the streets around it, nearly 23 percent of residents are 65 or older, about twice the share for Gainesville as a whole. Gainesville Home Care provides home care in Millhopper, Gainesville, FL so those homeowners can keep living in the houses they know.

What Locals Mean by Millhopper

Millhopper is not a city or a single subdivision. Locals use the name for the area around Devil's Millhopper Geological State Park and along NW 43rd Street, from the Millhopper Shopping Center at NW 16th Boulevard north to NW 53rd Avenue, which turns into Millhopper Road (County Road 232) as it heads west. Thornebrook Village, the Millhopper library and a long row of restaurants line NW 43rd Street.

The neighborhoods around it include Millhopper Forest off Millhopper Road, Blues Creek next to the state park, The Hammock, Ashton, Buckridge, Buckridge West, Millhopper Station and the large wooded lots of Millhopper Road Estates. We serve all of them, along with nearby Tioga to the southwest and the City of Alachua up the road. See our full list of service areas.

Aging in Place in an Established Millhopper Home

Most Millhopper houses are a generation old. The median home in ZIP 32653 was built in 1988, and much of Millhopper Road Estates dates to the late 1970s and 1980s. More than four in five homes in that ZIP code are owner-occupied, which is rare in a college town. The upside is deep roots: neighbors who have known each other for thirty years, a church a few minutes away and a doctor who knows the family.

The downside shows up as a parent gets older. A tub-and-shower combination that was fine at 60 becomes a fall risk at 85. Step-down rooms, long driveways under oaks and a yard full of leaves can turn simple chores into hazards. A caregiver works around the house as it is, helping with bathing, laundry and meals, while you decide on changes such as grab bars or a shower seat. Our guide to signs a parent needs help at home lists what to watch for.

Short Drives to North Florida Hospital and Shands

Millhopper sits close to two hospital systems. HCA Florida North Florida Hospital, still called North Florida Regional by many locals, is usually 10 to 15 minutes south on Newberry Road, and the UF Health Shands Emergency Center at Springhill on NW 39th Avenue is about the same. UF Health Shands Hospital is about 15 to 20 minutes away, and the Malcom Randall VA Medical Center about 20. Caregivers drive to appointments, wait with your parent, take notes and pick up prescriptions on the way home.

From the Sinkhole Rim to the Senior Center

Devil's Millhopper is a 120-foot-deep sinkhole, 500 feet across, protected as a state park since 1974. The long wooden stairway to the bottom is too much for many older visitors, but the shaded trail around the rim is an easy walk with a caregiver alongside. The stairway was closed after Hurricane Irma damaged it in 2017 and reopened in 2019.

Closer to home, the Gainesville/Alachua County Senior Recreation Center on NW 34th Boulevard, run by ElderCare of Alachua County, offers weekday fitness classes, education programs and social events. The Millhopper Branch Library on NW 43rd Street is another regular stop for large-print books.

Big oaks and storm season

Millhopper's tall trees are part of its charm, and Irma showed what they can do in a storm. Before hurricane season, plan for downed limbs, power outages and medications. Our hurricane guide for Gainesville seniors covers what to do.
